Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz has published footage showing an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) tank on Oct. 7 shelling the homes of settlers in Kibbutz Be’eri.
In its report, Haaretz noted that an IDF tank arrived at Kibbutz Be’eri hours after the massacre in the kibbutz began on Oct. 7. It immediately fired shells at the home of one settler, Pasi Cohen. The report claims Hamas militants barricaded themselves in the home with several Israeli residents, many of whom are of Arab descent. The video recovered by Haaretz was filmed by a police helicopter that was called to the area during the attacks.
One Be’eri resident, Yasmine Porat, testified that she saw an IDF tank shelling a house. The house reportedly had 14 Israelis and 39 Hamas fighters inside, all of whom were killed. This incident occurred after sundown. The footage obtained by Haaretz occurred in daytime, strongly suggesting that IDF tanks shelled settler homes more than once.
Hadas Dagan, an Arabl-Israeli and the owner of the house Porat saw being shelled, confirmed to Israeli television station Channel 12 that the IDF did attack the home where settlers were being held captive by Hamas using not only tank fire but also other heavy weapons.
Similar incidents have been reported as occurring on Oct. 7. In the Kibbutz Re’im, during Hamas’ attack on the area during the music festival, Haaretz reported that one settler who resided in the kibbutz approached an IDF trooper and asked if the tank shells they were shooting into the kibbutz would harm the settlers. The trooper replied that the IDF “only fire shells at the sides to bring down the walls.”
These revelations are surfacing just days after the IDF admitted that it killed three Israeli hostages in northern Gaza after mistaking them for a “threat.” The hostages were shot after they successfully escaped their Hamas captors even though they were waving white flags. The IDF is “reviewing” the incident. (Related: Hundreds gather in Tel Aviv to protest against Netanyahu government following accidental killing of 3 Israeli hostages.)
In November, the IDF was accused of setting up a perimeter outside Kibbutz Be’eri and refusing to engage Hamas, leaving members of the kibbutz to fight the attackers off.
One Be’eri resident told Haaretz that at around 6:10 p.m. on Oct. 7, they saw “hundreds of soldiers, dozens of Magav [Israel Border Police] vehicles, and others, and the soldiers ranged from soldiers to officers.”
“Personally, I approached every officer I saw, even those with the rank of sergeant major, and asked who was in command,” said the resident. “No one knew. It looked like total command chaos.”
“I told them that inside, families are fighting and being slaughtered, and they must enter [the kibbutz], but there was no one to talk to,” the resident continued. “These were times and hours when we needed to flood the kibbutz with soldiers, and very few forces entered. We fought all day on our own.”
At around the same time, Yair Avital, one of the surviving members of Kibbutz Be’eri’s security team, noted that at around 6:30 p.m., he and other survivors of the kibbutz’s security were evacuated after hours of fighting off Hamas only to see “500 soldiers stationed in an organized and orderly manner, standing and looking at us.”
“Five hundred IDF soldiers were outside, organized, with dogs, with equipment, weapons and armored vehicles. They were standing outside and not a single one of them was doing anything,” said Avital. “I remember shouting at them from the stretcher, ‘They’re slaughtering us! Go in! Save us!’ and none of them even looked at me, none of them said anything.”
“They kept repeating, ‘The field isn’t sterile, the field isn’t sterile,'” continued Avital, who did not understand what that meant. “People here were losing blood every minute, and the army was out there, and didn’t understand what was happening, and it broke my heart.”
The Kibbutz Be’eri was one of the hardest-hit communities during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. Over 10 percent of the kibbutz’s 1,200 residents died.
