The man who self-immolated outside of a courthouse in New York City, where former President Donald Trump’s trial is taking place, has been identified as a left-wing antifascist agitator.
Maxwell Crosby “Max” Azzarello, 37, set himself on fire in a designated protest area in Collect Pond Park in Chinatown, Lower Manhattan on Friday, April 19. Trump was in court across the street, standing trial for a hush money case. (Related: Donald Trump may be forced to miss his son Barron’s high school graduation due to New York trial.)
According to the New York Police Department, Azzarello entered the park at around 1:30 p.m. Chief of Department Jeffrey B. Maddrey told reporters that Azzarello walked to the center of the park, shuffled around his clothes, opened a backpack and took out and threw numerous pamphlets on the ground. He then pulled out a canister filled with liquid accelerant from his backpack, poured it all over himself and then lit himself on fire.
Videos taken of the self-immolation show Azzarello standing and even walking around for several seconds before he knelt on the ground and tried to stay still. After a few more seconds, he could be seen fully on the ground shaking in pain. It took around a minute before police and court officers were able to get to the scene to intervene with a fire extinguisher.
Azzarello was rushed to the burn unit of Weill Cornell Medical Center where he died several hours later.
Azzarello, identified as a resident of St. Augustine, Florida, was described by officials as a “conspiracy theorist,” and the pamphlets he spread right before self-immolating to be “propaganda based.”
Hours before he self-immolated, he published an article on his personal Substack blog called the “Ponzi Papers,” where he wrote what seems to be a manifesto and suicide note. This appears to be a copy of the papers he threw in the air right before he lit himself on fire. A copy of this manifesto was also posted to his social media accounts.
This 2,700-page manifesto proves that Azzarello was mainly concerned with fascism and the coming “apocalyptic fascist world coup” that he claimed Trump was participating in with President Joe Biden. On his LinkedIn page, Azzarello’s profile photo was of him with shorter hair next to former Democratic President Bill Clinton.
A deep dive into his online presence also proves that Azzarello is a leftist, with him stating plainly in his account on the social media platform Reddit that he is an “anarcho-communist,” a far-left political philosophy that advocates for communism without governments.
“I’m a huge proponent of left unity, and believe that only the left has the power to build a united movement to enact meaningful change,” he wrote. “I wish more leftists realized that shouting ACAB [all cops are b——-] and memeing about guillotines and Molotovs [Molotov cocktails] is precisely what our criminal government would want them to do.”
