A shocking observation of a man charging his electric car has highlighted the significant amount of electricity consumed by electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
According to the post on X, formerly Twitter, one charging station for an electric car can consume more electricity in one hour than 280 average homes.
The man in the video explained that he is recording to show people how much energy it takes to charge an electric vehicle. The charging station he used was from Electrify America, the largest open DC fast charging network in the United State. He consumed roughly 137 kilowatts to charge his EV at the 350-kilowatt station.
The man also noted that his energy consumption fluctuates and that it can go up to the full 350 kW.
To put this into perspective, the average American home consumes only 1.25 kilowatts per hour. If an EV consumes as much as 135 kilowatts per hour, that’s roughly the equivalent of 106 homes on the grid, with just one charging station.
The man recording the video added that if he wanted to get the full 350 kilowatts like the charging stations can supply, that would be the equivalent of 280 homes.
The charging station has six chargers and if they were all running at full capacity, the power consumption would be equivalent to a whopping 1,080 homes on the grid.
The Biden administration is still trying to convince the American public to switch to electric cars, and the government is not really educating the people about the amount of energy it takes to fast-charge EV car batteries.
It’s a huge amount of electricity, and the video helps explain why electric companies can’t supply that much power to one spot.
Imagine doing the same for 1,600 homes, and how much copper and wire it would take to supply that many houses.
The man claims that he loves his electric vehicle because it’s quiet, but he admitted that EVs also come with many disadvantages. (Related: Electric car EXPLODES on driveway and sets fire to family home after battery malfunction.)
The man added that if the government wants more people to drive electric cars, they first need to figure out how to make the numbers work, all without overloading the grid.
The man also commented that half of the chargers at the Electrify America charging station were either broken or being throttled down because the grid couldn’t handle the output required to charge cars.
While discussing the broken EV chargers, the man also discussed another common complaint among electric car owners: the lack of available charging stations all over the country.
And if you do find a charging station for your EV, he criticized that you will often have to wait in line or many of the chargers will be out of order.
He also wondered where the electricity was coming from at night, which was when he happened to be recording.
He added that it was probably not solar, and he closed the video by repeating that he posted the video to show EV owners and fuel gas car owners the amount of energy used to fully charge an electric car.
