Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) called on President Joe Biden to apologize to both the U.S. and Ukraine for pushing a “proxy war.”
He issued this call in a June 20 tweet, writing: “I call upon President Biden to issue two apologies. First, to the American people for misleading them into supporting an ugly proxy war on false pretenses. Second, and more importantly, to the Ukrainian people for maneuvering them into this war and ruining their country – all for the sake of U.S. (imagined) geopolitical interests.”
RFK Jr. cited a Feb. 5 article from Antiwar.com to back up his demand for an apology. According to the piece, former Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Naftali Bennett traveled to Moscow in March 2022 to mediate between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. While the Israeli leader managed to extract significant concessions from his Russian counterpart, the U.S. blocked any deal.
“They blocked it, and I thought they were wrong,” Bennett remarked. “I’ll say this in the broad sense. I think there was a legitimate decision by the West to keep striking Putin.”
The former Israeli PM recounted that former British PM Boris Johnson took an “aggressive line.” In contrast, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz were more “pragmatic.” Ultimately, Bennett said Biden adopted “both” positions.
“War was the plan all along, [and] the pattern here is clear,” the Democratic presidential candidate tweeted. “Not only is the Biden administration deceiving the American people about the motives for this costly and tragic war, but by continually escalating it, they put the whole world at risk of nuclear conflagration.”
RFK Jr. ultimately quoted the 1963 Peace Speech delivered by his uncle, former President John F. Kennedy. “Nuclear powers must avert those confrontations which bring an adversary to a choice of either a humiliating retreat or a nuclear war,” the elder Kennedy said at the time.
The Antiwar.com piece said that despite negotiations between Russia and Ukraine brokered by Bennett falling apart, the peace talks between the two warring nations continued.
Russian and Ukrainian officials later met in the Turkish city of Istanbul in March 2022, and followed this up with virtual consultations. Former U.S. officials who spoke to Foreign Affairs magazine said Moscow and Kyiv agreed on the framework for a tentative deal. Even Putin himself publicly said a deal was close following the Istanbul talks.
However, the Istanbul negotiations ultimately failed due to meddling by the West. A month after the talks in Turkey, Johnson visited the Ukrainian capital and urged Zelensky not to negotiate with Russia.
According to the Ukrainska Pravda online newspaper, the erstwhile British PM also brought two simple messages during his April 2022 trip. First, Putin is a war criminal that should be pressured instead of negotiated with. Second, Ukraine’s Western backers were not ready to sign a deal with Russia even though Kyiv itself was ready.
Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said some countries that were part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) wanted to prolong the Russia-Ukraine war.
“After the talks in Istanbul, we did not think that the war would take this long,” he said. “But following the [April 2022] NATO foreign ministers’ meeting, it was the impression that there are those within the NATO member states that want the war to continue … and Russia [to get] weaker. They don’t care much about the situation in Ukraine.” (Related: RFK Jr. on Ukraine: Russia is fighting an EXISTENTIAL war and can’t afford to lose.)
Days after Cavusoglu made his remarks, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin admitted that one of Washington’s goals in supporting Ukraine against Russia is to see Moscow “weakened.” He told reporters while in Poland: “We want to see Russia weakened to the degree that it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine.”
