A reporter for a mainstream media (MSM) outlet found himself on a Ukrainian government “hit list” following his report that most Crimeans support Russia.
English reporter Keir Simmons, who works with American MSM outlet NBC, traveled to the Crimea region in Ukraine to cover the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. During his visit, he interviewed several residents of the occupied region – who disclosed that they support Moscow over Kyiv.
Simmons asked some residents if they were Ukrainian or Russian, with some answering that they were the latter. They reiterated that if Ukraine tries to invade, they will fight every last Ukrainian.
This did not sit well with the Ukrainian government, which swiftly penalized Simmons for the simple “crime” of reporting about the truth on the ground. Kyiv then published the NBC reporter’s name and picture on the Myrotvorets website, accusing him of attacking “Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The website, which is curated by the Security Services of Ukraine (SBU), serves as a “hit list” outlining the purported enemies of Kyiv. (Related: Investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald reveals truth about Ukraine’s Zelenskyy in brutal Twitter thread.)
Simmons is not the only Westerner in the list, however. Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger also landed on the website for simply pointing out that the West’s campaign to bring Russia to its knees undermined the stability of both Europe and the rest of the world.
“Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome,” Kissinger said during the 2022 World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. “Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante.”
Because of his comments at Davos, Myrotvorets published Kissinger’s name and picture on the website in May of that year. It accused the former U.S. official of spreading “Russian-fascist propaganda” and acting as an “accomplice to the crimes of Russian authorities against Ukraine and its citizens.”
According to a May 2022 report by the Rio Times, other big names are also on the Myrotvorets website. These big names include Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Croatian President Zoran Milanovic. Incidentally, the only offense committed by the two leaders was taking a level-headed approach toward Russia.
The hit list described Orban as an “accomplice of Russian war criminals” and an “anti-Ukrainian propagandist.” It also zoomed in on his general “cooperation with the Russian aggressor,” his “participation in humanitarian aggression against Ukraine” and his purported role as an “accomplice in the crimes of the Russian authorities against Ukraine and its citizens.”
Specific “crimes” by the Hungarian leader included his refusal to allow Ukraine-bound weapons to pass through Hungary, his refusal to reject Russian gas supplies and his willingness to pay for the latter in rubles.
It also referenced Orban’s April 4, 2022 statement pertaining to the forces Budapest has to face to remain independent. These included the local opposition, “the bureaucrats in Brussels, money and institutes of the [George] Soros empire, international media and the Ukrainian President [Volodymyr Zelensky].”
Meanwhile, Myrotvorets painted Milanovic as an “accomplice of Russian invaders.” It accused the Croatian leader of conducting “humanitarian aggression against Ukraine,” supporting and justifying “Russian aggression” and “spreading Kremlin propaganda.”
The site referenced remarks delivered by Milanovic on Feb. 2, 2022, stating that Russia must be “a factor” in the “equation” of pan-European stability. It also mentioned how the Croatian president rejected Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and vetoed the inclusion of Sweden and Finland into the bloc.
The Rio Times described the Myrotvorets website in its report as “effectively a death list of politicians, journalists, entrepreneurs and other public figures who have been ‘cleared for firing.'”
“After all, observers confirm that being on this list must be understood as a call for murder against high-ranking government or state politicians – and this by official Ukrainian government representatives.”
