Dr. Bobby Mullins, the founder of Back to Basics Ministries, discussed the importance of having a good name and what it means.
During the Aug. 21 episode of “A Fresh Start” on Brighteon.TV, he remarked that everyone needs a fresh start – just like the title of his program. Even his ministry, formerly called A Fresh Start Ministries, had its own “fresh start” when it was renamed to the current iteration.
“There are all sorts of fresh starts that people need to make in life. And that’s one of the reasons we do our program’s take from a biblical perspective about the fresh starts in life that people need to make,” said Mullins. The minister quoted the book of Proverbs, which said: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver or gold.” (Proverbs 22:1)
The Memphis, Tennessee native gave two reasons why having a good name and reputation is important.
First, the Bible states that God knows our name, given that He even names all the stars in the heavens. The motivation behind having a good name and reputation, he explained, is that people represent God’s name wherever they go.
Second, people need a good name so they can honor and respect their parents – just like in the Fifth Commandment to “honor one’s father and mother.” Mullins warned that a good name can be destroyed in one generation. One’s parents may have had a good reputation, but they can sully and tarnish this impeccable name.
Mullins also mentioned that there are certain things that people think when they hear about a certain person’s name or reputation. Given this, he continued that God has many names and some of these names have meanings that show characteristics of His personality and identity.
During his program, Mullins also mentioned that there are some people whose names will always be connected to ill repute. Judas Iscariot is one such name, as he betrayed the Lord Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
There are also the names of Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth, known for assassinating U.S. presidents. Booth killed former President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. in 1865, while Oswald shot and killed former President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
Despite his examples of names that were tarnished by their reputation, he also recounted a story of redemption close to home – that of his grandfather Chris Mullins.
The elder Mullins was born out of wedlock, which was frowned upon back then. In spite of this stigma, he started a flooring company after moving to Memphis. A godly man, Chris Mullins completely rebuilt his name by developing a good reputation.
According to the “A Fresh Start” host, many people in America inherited a lot of money but not a good name. Some are wealthy, but don’t have a good reputation. This, he explained, is because of the crooked and corrupt manner in how they obtained their money.
In contrast, some of the persons he knew did not have a lot of money and material possessions. However, these persons made their mark on him as good, wonderful and godly people.
