Mainstream media journalists based in Gaza were embedded with Hamas during its initial incursion out of Gaza and the massacre of Israelis on Oct. 7. Worse yet, at least one so-called reporter has been confirmed to have actively participated in a massacre.
Mainstream media outlets like the Associated Press (AP), CNN, Reuters and the New York Times (NYT) used footage and photos taken by reporters embedded with Hamas during the group’s initial incursion into southern Israel, including during its massacre of Israelis in a kibbutz and a music festival. One notable individual who may have participated in the massacre is freelance photojournalist Hassan Eslaiah, whose initial footage of a massacre at a kibbutz in southern Israel was quickly picked up by media outlets like CNN and the AP.
In one Facebook live video posted by Eslaiah himself, he was seen carrying a hand grenade at a kibbutz.
Furthermore, an undated photo has surfaced of Eslaiah posing in an embrace with Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar. Media watchdog group Honest Reporting noted that Eslaiah “crossed into Israel, took photos of a burning Israeli tank and then captured infiltrators entering Kibbutz Kfar Azza.” The Kfar Aza massacre resulted in more than 100 civilians massacred and an undetermined number of individuals from the kibbutz taken hostage and dragged back into the Gaza Strip.
The organization added that it “obtained screenshots of Eslaiah’s now-removed tweets … in which he documented himself standing in front of the Israeli tank. He did not wear a press vest or a helmet, and the Arabic caption of his tweet read: ‘Live from inside the Gaza Strip settlements.'”
Honest Reporting warned about the Hamas connection of at least three other Gaza-based journalists: Yousef Masoud, Ali Mahmud and Hatem Ali.
Following the revelation that Eslaiah may have directly participated in the slaughter of Israelis, CNN severed its ties with the freelancer and quickly denounced him in a statement.
“We had no prior knowledge of the Oct. 7 attacks,” claimed CNN in a statement. “Hassan Eslaiah, a freelance journalist who has worked with a number of international and Israeli outlets, was not working for the network on Oct. 7. As of today, we have severed all ties with him.”
“We’ve discovered that a stringer may have been there during the attack with Hamas on Oct. 7. CNN had no prior knowledge of the attack,” added newly minted CNN CEO Mark Thompson.
The AP, Reuters and the NYT have similarly denied having any prior knowledge of the Hamas attack and insist that they have cut ties with Eslaiah and other freelance journalists with close connections to Hamas.
“We are no longer working with Hassan Eslaiah, who had been an occasional freelancer for AP and other international news organizations in Gaza,” said the AP in a statement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior cabinet ministers have demanded more information from these media outlets regarding their ties with the journalists embedded with Hamas during the initial massacres.
